Secret Ballots didn’t end voter coercion – they centralized it

THE SECRET BALLOT DECEPTION

I recently learned that the founding generation in America voted publicly. In the late 1800s, states adopted the government-printed “Australian ballot”, which was filled and deposited in secret.
Secret government ballots were pushed on the idea that public voting made voters susceptible to bribery and intimidation. Secret ballots reduced the transparency and verifiability of votes, but they also didn’t eliminate the manipulation problem: They centralized it.

Now your neighbors don’t know how you voted, but the government does. Ballot scanning machines pick up your name, signature and barcode. There is no public visibility into what voting machines do with that data. By knowing who voted and how, those in power can perform targeted get-out-the-vote initiatives and secret manipulation of voters, and the public would never know.
